Our Goals

We aim to study the koalas of St Bees Island in a non-invasive way, with annual surveys and condition checks on a portion of the population. We hope to understand why this population continues to thrive and survive the dynamic environment of coastal Queensland despite the presence of disease which is described as the biggest threat to this species elsewhere.

Research

St Bees Island is home to a thriving population of koalas, making it an ideal location for koala research. With its unique ecosystem and lack of human interference, the island provides a rich environment for studying these fascinating creatures. Through careful observation and analysis, researchers can gain valuable insights into koala behavior, habitat preferences, and population dynamics. We have published many scientific articles describing a range of biological attributes including communication, breeding behaviour, tree selection and adaptation to climate change as a result of our research.
